Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) Chairman Nur Misuari said he is “extremely grateful” to Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso for planning to build the first Muslim Cemetery in the nation’s capital by 2020.
“It is extraordinary and magnificent,” Misuari told Domagoso during a meeting between the two Friday at the Manila City Hall.
The Moro revolutionary and politician lauded Mayor Domagoso for giving importance to the Muslim community especially in burial practices.
For his part, Domagoso told Misuari that he considers the Muslim Cemetery a “gift” to the community.
Domagoso said that Muslim religious traditions will be of utmost consideration for the construction of the Muslim Cemetery within the vicinity of Manila South Cemetery.
Since there is only one or two Muslim cemeteries in Metro Manila, Domagoso said members of the Muslim community are left with no other option but to transport their dead to burial places either in Bulacan, Taguig, or in Mindanao.
“When I came in sabi ko ‘Bakit ganoon? Meron tayong Filipino cemetery. Mayroon tayong Chinese cemetery. Bakit wala tayong Muslim cemetery?” Domagoso said.
(I said, why is this the case? We have a Filipino cemetery. We have a Chinese cemetery. Why don’t we have a Muslim cemetery?)
The planned Muslim Cemetery will include its own Entry Gate and Washing Building.
